About the brush:

Flat edge eye liner brushes come in a standard shape and size to simplify eye liner application. I separate eyeshadow brushes into two categories: general and specific. The flat edge eye liner brushes shown here of the "specific" category. Their purpose is to precisely apply liner to the eye area, usually for the upper eye line only. The purpose for for eye liner is to frame the shape of your eyes and create eye shape enhancement as seen fit. This is the one area of your makeup where precision, patience and practice are the most important.

How to use:

When applying eyeliner with a flat edge eye liner, you are usually using a shadow or gel/cream eye liner. The brush is an extremely flat, straight edged design. The technique with this brush creates beautifully clean results and also is an alternative the eye pencil or visually impaired person. Simply press the tip if the flat edge into the liner product of your choosing and press the edge of the brush parallel to your upper lashes. Give the brush a little wiggle to set the liner, then move across the eye line and repeat the application. The brush is intended to be pressed into the lashes, applying product between the lashes to accentuate the natural shape of the eye. Now if you want the line darker you can add more product to your brush and repeat the same application technique until you have attained your desired intensity. To make your eyes look bigger, thicken the line from the pupil of your eye out so that the line becomes gradually thicker as it extends to the outer corner of your eye. By using the pupil as a starting point for eyeliner enhancement, you will accentuate the almond shape of the eye. If you thicken the entire line uniformly, your eye will appear more round and less almond. The same rule applies to the lower lashes. Your brush needs to be firm enough to distribute the product effectively and soft enough to not irritate the surface of your skin. The amount of resistance desired varies from person to person.

How to choose:

Feel the amount of stiffness in the palm of your hand. If you like what you feel, try it on your face. If the brush passes the feel test, then apply product with the brush for the ultimate application test. If it passes all of your criteria, mark it down as a possible future brush for you. Be discerning. Don,t buy the first brush you like. Narrow it down to your three top choices then pick from those. It is better to spend more time picking out brushes because it will be touching your face every time you put on makeup and it will be with you for at least ten years. One other test I do on the brush I am about to purchase is to gently pull on the hairs to see how that particular brush I am purchasing is constructed. If you get a handful of hair, ask to see another brush! Remember to always check what the return policy is on all purchases. Some brushes seem great and a month later they evolve into a shedding monster. Expect to lose a few hairs with any brush, however if the amount of hair loss increases instead of decreases, exchange or return it.
