Go Baroque!
The Makeup Gourmet succumbs to the gilded, the lush, the ornate
Many trends are hitting this fall's fashion scene. However, the one that resonates most deeply with me is baroque. The highest order of opulence and glory, a celebration of dynamic textures, colors and shapes this has inspired my look for the fall season, "Going Baroque."
Baroque is so grand and heavenly that the eye cannot rest upon seeing it, traveling instead from this shape to that color, searching constantly to see the whole but the whole is too big to be taken in with one glance.
Of course, multi-textured and layered clothing, along with large pins and half-up hairstyles, bracelets, necklaces, beaded earrings, patterned hosiery all add to this greater-than-thou baroque finish.
To finish it off, we need a makeup that stops people in their tracks as they try to fathom what was done to create the effect.
So now, for your creative pleasure, my fall 2005 Trend Recipe For Style...
Going Baroque
Ingredients
- Medium- to full-coverage satin-finish foundation
- Light-reflective powder
- Eyebrow powder
- Russet red, smoke and gold eyeshadow
- Black liquid and black waterproof pencil eyeliner
- Lash-building mascara
- Good coverage concealer
- Bright, fiery red lipstick with matching lip liner pencil
- Contour cheek color
- Pearly face cream highlighter
Tools
- Foundation brush
- Powder brush
- Eyebrow brush
- Standard eyeshadow brush
- Contour eyeshadow brush
- Concealer brush
- Lip brush
- Blush brush
Preparation
The skin:
- Start with a clean, freshly moisturized face.
- Apply foundation with brush from center of the face outward until at least medium coverage is achieved. It is important to neutralize any discoloration in the center of the face.
- Lightly dust skin with reflective powder.
The eyes:
- Heighten brow with powder and slightly overextend the outer tail of the eyebrow.
- Cover entire ball of eye up to the depth of the crease with the russet shadow.
- Apply liquid liner along entire upper eyeline from the inner corner to the outer edge following lash bed. Thicken liner from the pupil out to corner of eye.
- Apply waterproof eyeliner pencil to inner eyeline above bottom lashes from the inner corner to the outer edge. Connect top and bottom eye line in outer corner of eye.
- Apply smoke shadow into crease of eye from outer corner in, taking the arch of the contour slightly above the crease in the outer corner of the eye.
- Apply gold shadow under the eyebrow along the full length of the brow bone.
- Blend all three colors well.
- Lavish on mascara. Add extra to the outer lashes for more drama.
- Clean up under eye with concealer using a concealer brush.
The lips:
- Line lips fully and apply lipstick liberally. Blot and reapply lipstick.
The cheeks:
- Brush blush on the underside of the cheekbone from the ear towards your nose, enhancing or creating the natural shadow along the underside of the cheekbone.
The finish:
- Warm pearly highlighters with fingers and apply along upper shelf of cheekbone, above eyebrows, down center of nose, across chin, and a little on the cheeks just to the side of the nose.
Et voila! You now have a passionate, dramatic look that, in its complexity, keeps the viewer looking and looking and looking...
Have a great fall. See you at the holiday season.
