Makeup Gourmet® September 2004, Vol. 2, Issue 4 The Classic Fall Look By Chris Scott, The Makeup Gourmet ![]() Classic is my new trend. Each season offers a new twist on trend: Orange is the new pink, beige the new white, etc. But what about a style that is truly itself, not a trend reinvented? This month's recipe is for the classic of all classic makeup looks, fall makeup. The story told by designers - in clothing, accessories, hair, and ultimately makeup - proves the true substance of fall makeup. At no other season do designers have so much to say and show. Fall is an anchor in design, a starting point from which so many trends are born. Like the song "Stardust" inspires musicians, fall's classic structure inspires designers to dream. What follows is a recipe for Classic Fall Makeup, a template from which you can build and create a look as individual as you are, steeped in the classic traditions of fall. Fall Classic Makeup The Skin: Start with a clean, freshly moisturized face. Blend foundation with a foundation brush from the center of the face out. After a smooth layer is in place, use your fingers to apply more foundation heavily in the center of the face. Stipple (press and roll) the foundation into your skin with a sponge wedge to create a full-coverage smooth finish. Brush translucent powder over the whole face, brushing from the center out in smooth, long, slightly downward strokes. Next, stipple more powder into the skin with a cotton pad to achieve a fully matte, high-coverage finish. The Lips: Line lips full and dark with lip liner. Soften the liner with the lip brush. Apply lipstick with brush; blot and reapply to achieve a full-coverage matte look. The Eyes: See "Recipe for Wow Brows". Press orange eye shadow over and over into the eyelid to build up intensity. Brush purple shadow in the crease from the outer corner inward, but no farther in than the pupil of the eye. Achieve a deep rounded contour effect. Brush burnt gold eye shadow on brow bone just below the brows and above the purple contour. Apply the green eyeliner along entire upper eyeline from the inner corner to the outer edge, following lash bed, and thicken until the color is clearly visible when the eye is open. Draw a thin black liquid line in between lashes to heighten the overall intensity. Draw on the inside line (above lashes next to the eyeball - also known as the "wetline") with a black waterproof pencil. Smudge green eye shadow below lower lashes under the entire eye. Apply thickening mascara in long clean strokes. Avoid clumping by using an eyelash comb. Clean up under eye with concealer, using a concealer brush. Cheeks: Brush blush on the underside of the cheekbone from the ear towards your nose. Achieve a high-contour effect while adding some color to the overall look. Afterwards, dust with translucent powder to blend face contour and to add an overall smooth matte finish. Ultimately, fall seduces in the richness and passion of its colors. Fall is succumbing to the inevitable, giving in to the intensity of the turning season, the peaking of harvest, and the seduction of our senses. See you next month.
