Mist-On/Airbrush Tan

The Miracle of Mist-On/Airbrush tan

It's July- Do you know where your tan is? For some it is in the sun itself. For others it is in a simulated sun/UV beds. And for still others it is found in a bottle. Whatever your method of tanning may be, now is the time to have one (a tan that is).

If you are not aware, here is a brief recap. There is no such thing as a healthy tan. Your skin darkens (produces melanin) as a cry for help from UV/sun exposure. The darker you get, the louder the cry for help. The negative results of melanin production are a weathered, leathery looking skin, hyper pigmentation resulting in dark spots, and, most importantly, heightened skin cancer potential. The most common option is Dihydroxyacetone, other known as DHA. It is a colorless sugar that has been FDA approved for more than 30 years. DHA darkens the skin by interacting with the amino acids in the dead surface cells found in the outermost layer of the skin, producing color changes. For the longest time, this chemical was delivered to the skin in a lotion, gel, or aerosol spray-like form bought in department and drug stores. The user applies the product directly on their body with their hands like a body lotion. The drawbacks to this type of application include dirty looking fingernails, uneven application and uneven color.

So what are your options? Within the last couple of years, some very innovative people have taken existing technology (airbrush) and applied it to self-tanning. This is a process by which a trained technician evenly sprays your entire body, or whatever part of your body you want tan, with a light airbrush stream of DHA. The advantages over self-application are huge. First of all, this careful "brushed" on application guarantees an all over even colored result. It is important to note that DHA is heat activated. This means that when you spread self-tanner on with your hands, the action of self-tanner reacting to your own body heat changes the efficacy of the DHA as it is being spread. This is another cause of the uneven self-applied self-tanner. With the airbrush, the DHA is reacting only when it hits your skin, thus the reaction is even and consistent.

Taken innovation a step further, someone got the bright idea to not have to physically airbrush the DHA all over the body as it proved to be labor intensive. They created a booth that the tanner stands in, and in four sweeps of the mister, the DHA is applied all over the body. The most effective form of this type of self-tan application is the mist-on tanning machine. It excels in that it not only mists the DHA evenly over the entire body, it immediately fans you after each mist to dry and set the DHA to eliminate streaking and an extended dry off period.

I have seen both of these processes at work and am impressed equally by their ease of application and the results.
