Makeup Gourmet® May 2004, Vol. 2, Issue 3 Tips for Summer Makeup By Chris Scott, The Makeup Gourmet So many elements to consider for summer makeup. Heat-resistant, sun-protective, tan-appropriate, travel-worthy - even with all these considerations, summer makeup is, by far, the quickest-to-apply and lowest-maintenance makeup of the year. Here are the products and application tips you need to consider. Products to Beat the Sun and Heat Since most of us will be experiencing more sun and heat during the summer, we need product that is resistant to both. To give your face greater sun protection without adding a greasy layer of sunblock, mix an oil-free SPF 30 or higher (I love Coppertone Sport in the blue bottle, available at drug stores) with your AM moisturizer before applying it to your skin. This way you get enhanced sun protection without enhanced greasiness. There are many lines that offer SPF makeup, especially in foundations and lipstick and gloss. As long as you include sunglasses and a stylish hat when in direct contact with the sun, you are free to tear it up in the sun without fear of soleil-overexposure. Even in the shade, high heat humidity can melt the best-set makeup. My advice is to work with the heat and not try to fight it. Adding more makeup to compensate for heat exposure will only cause an even huger meltdown. Instead, try these tips. For foundation, use either a more sheer-tinted moisturizer type foundation (with concealer where needed, for extra coverage) or a mineral powder makeup that is extremely heat resistant. Always blot your face with a tissue before re-powdering to avoid a sticky build-up. For cheeks and lips, use liquid tints that tend to stain your skin, so the colors won't melt off. For eyes, use a single summery color all over the eye (aqua-green, bronzy, corally), waterproof eyeliner and mascara. Application Tips: Summer Bronze Goddess Makeup
IngredientsApplicationware Preparation The Skin: Start with a clean, freshly moisturized face. Blend primer with brush from the center of the face out. Even out tone but do not mask it. The look is glowing and transparent. (Add foundation only if and where coverage is needed). Blend darker bronze powder with contour brush over the cheekbones, across forehead, down nose and across chin. In all other places, blend in the gold highlight powder. This creates nuance and the appearance of natural color rather than a solid face of fake bronze. The Lips: Line lips softly and apply lipstick. Blot and apply gloss in the center of lips blending softly outwards. The Eyes: Softly sweep lighter bronze eyeshadow over whole eye. Brush the darker bronze eyeshadow on lid only from outer corner to just past center of eye. Both of the last two shadows need to be applied softly with a watercolor effect in mind. Let the cross section of colors in the center of the eye create their own new third color. Apply waterproof eyeliner along entire upper eyeline from the inner corner to the outer edge following lash bed. Optional: Apply a different color waterproof liner lightly between lower lashes. Apply waterproof mascara in long clean strokes accentuating length. Avoid clumping by using an eyelash comb. Clean up under eye with concealer using a concealer brush. Cheeks: Apply cheek tint or stick with fingers or foundation brush on the apple of your cheek, blending half way back on cheekbone and also slightly down and back from the apple to create a flushed, apres-yoga look. Brush bronzing powders once more if needed. Get ye to a swimming pool!
