Winter Skin Rescue

It is no secret that our skin becomes its most challenged during the winter months. Factors such as cold, indoor heating, holiday diet and perhaps less exercise can all contribute to a lackluster looking skin. Symptoms range from flaky skin, taught feeling, dull, and increases appearance of fine lines. How then to combat these symptoms.

Here are my 5 winter skin rescue tips:
  1. If it is in your budget and schedule, arrange a professional facial appointment. Just like your car needs it s oil changed periodically to keep the motor running at its optimum, so the skin responds to the care and detail of a professional facial. There are a variety of facial focuses, depending on the needs of your skin. Most facials involve some sort of deep cleaning. For the winter facial, I suggest one that nourishes and deeply hydrates and conditions the skin. Put back what the elements have depleted from your skin. If your skin has a large buildup of dead skin cells and/or fine lines seem more pronounced, consider a mild glycolic peel or dermabrasion.
  2. If time, budget or necessity does not permit a professional facial, do a moisture mask at home. This is a facial mask you can give yourself over and over as needed. The moisture mask pushes water into the skin and helps your skin to maintain moisture longer. Many cosmetic lines and salons sell such a mask. I especially like the Hydra-Therepy from Erno laszlo. Call the line of your choice and inquire on what they have to offer. If they do not offer one, ask for a recommendation. Also, a mild exfoliater will remove the dead skin cells and reveal the inherent luster in your skin.
  3. Make sure that the moisturizer you are using is up to the task of winter skin. I have many clients who move from a lotion to a cream during the winter to offset the significant amount of dehydration the winter skin experiences. Many people switch back and forth from lotion to cream as needed during the winter. Pay attention to your skin daily and give it enough moisture as is needed. Also, invest in a moisture supplement. This is an oil-free product which is applied under or over your moisturizer. Its job is to add and keep hydration (water) in your skin. Indoor heat and cold weather quickly draw moisture out of our skin daily. This is a great preventative measure to keep the hydration level in your skin constant. I like Hydra Serum from Chanel and Cura Forte from Borghese.
  4. Cardiovascular exercise. Respiration is one of the best treatments you can give your skin (and body). By increasing oxygen flow throughout your system, toxins are purged and a healthy state of being is achieved.
  5. Drink water.
